Yellowstone’ Prequel ‘1923’ Films Scenes In Lockhart For Season Two

One of the Texas Hill Country’s most picturesque towns is set to be transformed by the bright lights of Hollywood. As Austin ramps up production on one of TV’s biggest Westerns, it seems the Dutton saga is riding down to the Barbecue Capital of the Texas.

The Lockhart Economic Development Corporation shared that 1923, the Yellowstone prequel series, will be filming in the downtown area this week. The EDC teased a photo of the 1920s-era cars on the set, showing the town’s transformation, in a Facebook post on Monday, July 29. The organization boasted its “Film Friendly City” status in the caption.

“As a ‘Film Friendly City,’ Lockhart has many locations fit for the screen and a great way to showcase our hidden gems while fostering creativity and economic growth,” the government organization wrote.

Lockhart is set to be transformed into Fort Worth for filming a scene from season two on Wednesday, July 31, according to a July 5 post from Legacy Casting. Residents have been sharing photos of the area all week as Bonnie & Clyde-esque cars have lined downtown Lockhart and local businesses have been transformed into historic properties.

The use of Lockhart’s scenic downtown comes as the Yellowstone prequel is filming in neighboring Austin. The shoot, which is expected to last until mid-September, is will reportedly bring a $51 million impact to the city, according to previous MySA reports.

MySA has reached out to the Lockhart EDC for details on what this filming brought to the city including the number of jobs and spent local wages.

Yellowstone Sequel Series Gets Title & Plot As Patrick J. Adams, Kurt Russell, & Michelle Pfeiffer Eye Roles

A new Yellowstone spinoff is reportedly eyeing Kurt Russell, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Patrick J. Adams to join the cast. The neo-Western franchise was created by Taylor Sheridan, who now oversees the flagship series as well as several spinoffs both currently on the air and in development. Yellowstone is ending later this year when the second part of season 5 airs and a spinoff set after those events has long been in development, with reports indicating that Matthew McConaughey could star.

Now, TVLine reports that the spinoff, formerly known as 2024, will be titled The Madison. Russell, Pfeiffer, and Adams are all nearing deals to star in the series, which will follow the matriarch of the Clyburn clan, Stacy, as she moves her family to Montana after her husband and brother-in-law die in a plane crash. Production will begin later this month with a 2025 release date being targeted. It’s unclear what roles Adams, Russell, and Pfeiffer are in talks for.

The Madison Could Keep Yellowstone Alive

A Contemporary Spinoff Is Exactly What The Franchise Needs

Though Yellowstone has found success in spinoffs like 1883 and 1923, the inherent appeal of the flagship show is its modern setting mixed with its cowboy attitude. Continuing that in the modern day will be key to the future success of the franchise, which has been mired in drama due to Kevin Costner’s exit from the flagship series. Despite Costner’s exit, though, there are reports that certain Yellowstone cast members will return in a future spinoff, though it’s unclear if that will be in The Madison or another series.

Now, it sounds like the Clyburn clan will embody the fish-out-of-water dynamic that the series cites so often.

What is clear is that The Madison will add a new dynamic to the show’s formula. Yellowstone has poked fun at city slickers attempting to wrangle the cowboy ethos, but the show has always been about the Duttons protecting their land from those very people, among others. Now, it sounds like the Clyburn clan will embody the fish-out-of-water dynamic that the series cites so often. How they might be connected to the Duttons remains unclear, but it will be interesting to see how The Madison will bridge the gap between itself and Yellowstone.

Series Year Seasons

1883 2021-2022 1
1923 2022-Present 2 (so far)

1944 Unknown 1
The Madison (formerly known as 2024) 2025 1

With TVLine reporting that filming is set to begin this year and a 2025 release being eyed, it seems that Paramount is intent on maintaining momentum for the franchise after Yellowstone ends. Other series, like 1944 and 6666, are currently in development, too, but it seems like the network may be fast-tracking The Madison to ensure that interest remains high. It was already clear that the Yellowstone franchise wasn’t going anywhere, but with stars like Russell, Pfeiffer, and Adams at the forefront of a new series, the series could once again find itself back on top despite a tumultuous ending for the original show.
