Paramount+ confirmed that the show, which ‘explores the early twentieth century when pandemics, historic drought, and the end of Prohibition all plague the mountain west, and the Duttons who call it home’ will be renewed for one final season.

Filming for the final season is set to begin in July 2024 and run through September.

Brandon Sklenar, who stars as Spencer Dutton in 1923, told the Hollywood Reporter that the show will be ending after season two. He said: ‘No, no, it’s bookend. [The series is] still limited, but I think of it as one piece – there’s just a split in the middle, but it’s all one piece. It will conclude.’

When the second season was originally announced, it was planned that the series would return to Butte, Montana, where the first outing was filmed, but it will now be shot in Austin, Texas.

It is reported that both Helen and Harrison were happy to be back for a second season. The 78-year-old British actress told Deadline  it was ‘very happy news as far as I was concerned.’

She said: ‘I’m fascinated to see where Cara is going to go. Taylor [Sheridan – the show’s creator] did say she is very much of her era, she’s looking after the house. That is what her job is. But then he said, ‘Wait, things are going to happen.’ So we’ll see.’
